How I captured a city of contrasts

New Zealand based photographer, Amos Chapple, explains how he photographed the contrasting skyline of St. Petersburg to capture the old and the new.

“The weather in spring is perfect for photographing St. Petersburg. One day I’d have bright sunlight to capture its glittering palaces, then the next, heavy cloud, casting further drabness of Soviet concrete buildings.

My biggest problem was how to get a fresh perspective on a city that’s as flat as a table. Having lost one camera to a malfunctioning drone, I had to resort to using my feet. I knocked on doors, rode countless elevators and sought permission to climb any building I could to get the viewpoint I needed.”
